Japan Posts 16th Straight Monthly Trade Deficit

The 16th straight monthly deficit resulted in the longest string of deficits since 1979 The Japanese Finance Ministry says the weaker yen is pushing up the price of imported fuel, according to Japan's (NHK WORLD) website Exports surged more than 18% from a year earlier in yen terms Automakers saw strong demand for vehicles in the US, Europe and China Japan spent about 26% more on imports, led by liquefied natural gas and crude oil The cost of all imports has been rising for the last 12 months All of Japan's nuclear reactors are currently offline, leaving utilities to rely on fuel-burning thermal plants to make up for the loss.
