Call for caution as Oman braces for rainy weekend

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) With forecast of a wet weekend for the sultanate, ROP and road safety experts have called for caution while driving, saying that roads become more accident-prone during and after rains. Speed limits need to be strictly adhered to, they say.

''There is a need to keep within the speed limits and adhere to traffic rules. Overusing brakes is one of the common mistakes drivers make on wet roads, causing the vehicle to skid and harm the driver and other road users,'' an ROP official said.

According to road safety experts, limited knowledge of driving in the rain is another common problem. ''Motorists drive very fast even though authorities have set a speed limit. Drivers need to keep in the lane, and not overtake,'' said Adel al Musalmy, corporate road safety advisor, Petroleum Development Oman.

''Engine oil fallen on wet roads makes them even more slippery and because of this, there is a need to maintain safe distance between vehicles.

''Drivers also need to control the flow of other vehicles, and keeping distance between vehicles in front and behind them can be done by cruising at a safe speed,'' he added.

The ROP advisory also cautions people against venturing into wadis prone to flash floods.

The forecast for Thursday shows clear to partly cloudy skies with chance of isolated rain along the coastal areas of Dhofar and Musandam, and chances of early morning low clouds over Al Wusta.

Other parts of the sultanate will have clear skies.

Forecast for the following 48 hours shows partly cloudy skies with chance of isolated rain and occasional  thundershowers over Musandam, North Batinah, Hajar mountains and adjoining areas. A statement for the Public Authority for Civil Aviation (PACA) had said that hail is also likely.&nbs
