169 Omani English teachers pass Cambridge knowledge test

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) A ceremony to honour 169 Omani primary and secondary school English teachers who have successfully completed their Teacher Knowledge Essentials programme was held at the British Ambassador's residence on Monday.

The programme was conducted by the British Council from September 2012 to April 2013.

The online Cambridge Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT) was taken by teachers from across 11 governorates in Oman.

This is the first time that professional development opportunities have been delivered in this way at a national level in the Gulf region.

Paul Doubleday, British Council director, Oman and Yemen appreciating the efforts of the teachers said, ''This is a wonderful achievement for the teachers and an innovative approach by the Ministry of Education.''

The project included an extensive research and evaluation component in the form of online surveys, focus group meetings, phone interviews with participants and a group of observers who had access to the course.

H E Dr Hamoud bin Khalfan bin Mohammed al Harthy, Undersecretary for education and curricula in the Ministry of Education (MoE) handed over the certificates.

A number of officials from the MoE and British Council who contributed to the success of this project were also present.

Commenting on the novel programme by MoE, Suliman al Jamoodi, deputy general director of the Directorate of Human Resources Development said, ''An online training programme has enabled us to reach more teachers across the width and breadth of Oman.

The British Council online TKT has been able to supplement or support our existing training programmes, which are delivered face-to-face.

Dr Sarah Rich, director of the Teachers' Training Centre at the MoE said, ‘The data and feedback gained from this research phase was valuable on a number of levels.''

Following the success of this endeavour, 250 English teachers will be given the opportunity to take the British Council TKT Essentials Programme for the year 2013-14
