Energy experts to meet in Doha today

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Experts in the energy industry will meet today at the second Doha Carbon and Energy Forum (DCEF) to discuss Qatar's strategy towards greater energy efficiency. Joining the event as a sponsor will be Maersk Oil, who in partnership with Qatar Petroleum (QP) have made significant progress in this area, successfully reducing flaring from offshore operations in Qatar by 92 percent since 2007. Held under the patronage of H H Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of Qatar Foundation (QF), DCEF provides a forum for discussion and debate on carbon dioxide emissions, carbon abatement solutions, alternative energy and energy efficiency in Qatar. Speaking on this collective challenge, the session will be opened by two of Qatar's most key figures in the energy and research community, Minister of Energy and Industry H E Dr Mohammed bin Saleh Al Sada and President of Research and Development at QF Faisal Al Suwaidi. Successful environmental management is recognised as one of the founding pillars of Qatar's National Vision 2030, such that there is harmony between its protection and economic growth. In support of this, Maersk Oil has made continuous efforts to incorporate environmental frameworks and new technologies into its operations. Lewis Affleck, Managing Director of Maersk Oil Qatar, said: "In partnership with Qatar Petroleum (QP), Maersk Oil Qatar operates one of the world's most complex offshore oilfields, Al Shaheen. The field produces around one third of Qatar's daily oil production, but in pursing responsible and efficient operations, together we have successfully reduced gas flaring from the field to a minimum - a rare accomplishment in the industry." "We have achieved a 92 percent reduction in flaring and a 50 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions between 2007 and 2012. By capturing previously flared gas and turning it into clean electricity, we have also increased the national electricity supply while simultaneously transferring technical knowledge on energy efficiencies to local industry," he added. By integrating gas compression and gathering systems into future field development, the 'Al Shaheen Oil Field Gas Recovery and Utilisation Project' has driven emissions reduction while increasing oil production in Qatar. It has since been recognised as the world's largest Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project registered under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate (UNFCC), and the first registered CDM project in the country. Affleck continued: "Qatar has already shown itself to be making positive progress towards managing its environmental emissions alongside the growth of oil and gas operations. We're proud to be supporting the 2nd Doha Carbon and Energy Forum as a platform to share our expertise and experience in this regard with our peers.
