(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) As part of its ongoing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities, KIMS Oman Hospital has announced that the hospital will observe the ‘World Diabetes Day' on November 14. ‘‘We all know that diabetes is running at record levels worldwide, and it is alarming to note that almost half of the world population, still remains undiagnosed.
It gives us great pleasure to join the rest of the world in celebrating the World Diabetes Day this year, under the theme, ‘Diabetes: Protect our Future'. We will be organising a diet exhibition and free diabetes screening camp to mark the Day on November 14 and November 16, 2013,'' said V M A Hakkim, executive director, KIMS Oman Hospital.
According to the International Diabetes Federation, diabetes is a devastating global public health threat that currently affects 366mn people. Over 550mn will suffer by 2030 if immediate action is not taken.WDD is celebrated by over 200 member associations and is active in more than 160 countries. Dr Houssam Ahmad Akoum, chief operating officer, KIMS Oman Hospital, said: ‘‘The burden of diabetes is increasing in the region, and Oman is no exception.
The causes of diabetes are complex in character, and experts rightly pointed out that it is due to rapid increases in overweight, obesity, physical inactivity and lifestyle. We urge the public at large – citizens and residents - to visit KIMS on November 14 and November 16, and participate in the free diabetes screening and the diet exhibition from 10am to 2pm. Diabetes imposes life-long demands on people living with the disease and on their families.
