Oman Sail launches sports awareness campaign


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Oman Sail has launched a nationwide student sports awareness campaign as part of youth sailing programme, co-sponsored by Omantel and Oman Shipping Company Oman Sail launched the campaign at schools and colleges as part of a commitment by its youth sailing programme to promote the health benefits of keeping fit.

Themed ''Fun and Fitness through Sailing'', the first event of the series was launched recently at The Sultan's School in Muscat with presentations by Oman's popular sailing heroes Nasser al Mashari, a champion of the Extreme Sailing Series and Ibtisam al Salmi, a key member of the Women's Sailing Team.

The inspirational visits included ones to Azzan bin Qais school and Higher College of Technology. At the Sultan's School, Nasser al Mashari urged the students to try sailing and discover how much fun the sport can be. He also spoke about the values and ethics of sport and how respect and self-discipline can help shape character and develop skills and fitness abilities to a level where it is possible to represent ones country at the highest of competitive international arenas.

Ibtisam stressed how success in sailing requires hard work, self-confidence and ambition. She outlined some of the achievements of the Women's Sailing Team who had competed in two consecutive annual EFG Sailing Arabia – The Tour events which require 14 days of offshore racing in the Gulf and a series of regattas in France including the J80 Worlds in Marseille. She also told how her teammate Raiya al Habsi had become the first Omani woman to race in the famed Fasnet race as crew aboard Oman Air Musandam. Ibtisam said there were many opportunities in sailing and shore based administration work.<
