EU trade commissioner faces tax fraud charges


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht is to appear before a court in Belgium on November 25 over charges of tax fraud, Belgian media reported on Friday. Tax authorities are seeking 900,000 euros from De Gucht, a former Belgian foreign minister, on earnings from shares in an insurance firm in 2005. A spokesperson for the European Commission Pia Ahrenkilde-Hansen told journalists that the case is a "private matter", and "concerns issues and periods before he was appointed commissioner."
