(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) India on Friday successfully test- fired its indigenously developed nuclear-capable Agni-I ballistic missile off the coast of the eastern state of Orissa, local media reported.
The missile has a strike range of 700 km from a test range off Orissa coast as part of a user trial by the army, said Press Trust of India (PTI). The surface-to-surface, single-stage missile was powered by solid propellants and sent from a mobile launcher at 09:33 a.m. from a test range at Wheeler Island in the Bay of Bengal. Earlier Sunday, April 7, India successfully testfired its home-made, nuclear-capable, surface-to-surface Agni II missile from a defense base off the coast of the eastern state of Odisha, highly placed sources said.
"The medium-range Agni II missile, with a strike range of over 2,000 km, was testfired from Wheeler Island off Odisha coast at 10. 20 a.m. The Agni-II missile carried a dummy payload instead of a nuclear warhead during this test. The testfiring conducted by the Strategic Forces Command of the Indian Army was successful," the sources said.
The Agni II missile, developed by state-owned Defense Research and Development Organization, has already been inducted in the Indian Army. The missile is 20 meters long and weighs 17 tonnes. It can carry a payload weighing 1 tonne. India plans to testfire Agni V, with a strike range of over 5, 000 km, in June.
