Woman living destitute in Muscat after husband deported for theft

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) A Bangladeshi woman and her five children have been leading a hand-to-mouth existence for the past three years after her husband was arrested and deported for stealing a goat to feed his family. The women and children currently live with an Omani family in Mawaleh who have provided them free shelter.

Parveen came to Oman around 13 years ago where she met her husband. The five children, aged between six and 11 years, have no passports and have never attended school. Parveen says she makes RO50-RO60 from sewing Omani caps. ''My children aren't old enough to take care of themselves. Sometimes people give us rice, wheat and food supplies.

''Our neighbours have been extremely helpful. They have allowed us to live in their house without rent. I am worried as my children don't know where they belong.''

She says she wants to return home but also fears it would worsen her condition as her parents haven't tried to contact her and her husband too ''rarely calls''.

Officials at the Bangladeshi Embassy said that they were aware of the case and are planning to repatriate the family.

''We are preparing their documents and are planning to send them home to Ghazipur in Bangladesh. We will also arrange for their tickets. In this case the Omani family they live with is emotionally attached to the children,'' said Rabiul Islam, counsellor, Labour Section of the embassy, adding that the Omani family wants to help the woman and her children in every possible way, even after they fly back hom
