(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) The Israeli military confirmed last night reports that an Israeli army reconnaissance aircraft crashed in northern Gaza Strip during operation activity on Sunday.
The Israeli army said in a brief statement that the crash was due to a technical fault and that the matter is being investigated
It crashed just 500 meters far from the borderline between northeastern Gaza Strip and Israel
However, Hamas security source announced earlier that it had managed to control the "Skylait-B" drone and downed it in an open area in northern Gaza
The Al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, said that is where its fighters who managed to down the Israeli drone
In related news, Israeli sources said that the Israeli Defense Minister, Moshe Yaalon, and a number of senior military leaders, survived a possible attack by Palestinian fighters, as the officials visited the border tunnel that was uncovered by the army in October
The tunnel led from Gaza to an Israeli settlement to the Israeli side of the border
The sources said, that despite the fact that the army had reported that it had defused the explosives which were placed inside the tunnel, one bomb was still active
The bomb however, did not explode
Yaalon and the army commanders visited the tunnel on October 29, and it was only two days later that the remaining bomb exploded, as soldiers of the corps of engineers were inspecting the tunnel
The explosion injured five members of the engineer corps
Israeli sources however, stress that the bomb was in the tunnel while Yaalon inspected it, and that it as well could have exploded at any given moment, while Yaalon was there
The Israeli army reportedly launched a classified investigation into the incident.
