2013 Qatar National Robot Olympiad Kicks Off


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) The 2013 Qatar National Robot Olympiad started today with moree than 200 teams comprising some 500 students from schools across Qatar taking part at the Doha Exhibition Centre. A statement issued by Mersik Qatar today said the two-day event features 200 teams and 500 students, who compete in a range of demanding challenges using LEGO Mindstorms robots The Olympiad forms part of the GO ROBOT programme that aims to build interest among students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics Since April more than 300 teachers have attended intensive robotics training sessions at the College of North Atlantic Qatar and hundreds of robotics kits have been donated to schools across Qatar The event is open to the public and hundreds of parents and spectators are expected to attend The National Olympiad and associated schools programme are sponsored by Maersk Oil Qatar, supported by the College of North Atlantic-Qatar under the patronage of the Supreme Council of Education and with the support of Qatar Petroleum HE Sheikh Faisal Al-Thani, Deputy Managing Director of Maersk Oil Qatar, commented,"The National Robot Olympiad is a natural fit for Maersk Oil Qatar as the students are faced with complex challenges in building a robot We also face complex challenges in operating the Al Shaheen offshore oil field It is my hope that some of these students will go on to become the future leaders in Qatar's energy industry." The event will see teams compete in a range of challenges using LEGO Mindstorms robots for the chance to represent Qatar at the World Robot Finals in Jakarta, Indonesia, later in the year.
