GPCA counts down to inaugural Sustainability Conference

(MENAFNEditorial) The Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Association (GPCA) is counting down to its inaugural Sustainability Conference with less than 60 days to go until the event begins in December. With the world's population rapidly rising and set to increase by 50% in the next 35 years, the pressure on natural resources will also increase meaning the need for individuals and companies to be more sustainable is at an all-time high. As a major supplier to many industries including food, transport and electronics, the GCC chemicals industry must ensure that it is as sustainable as possible in order to reduce its environmental footprint and increase its positive social impact. Many chemicals companies are already investing heavily in sustainable solutions and technologies. With the lack of water in the Middle East being a major challenge, the Sustainability Conference will kick off with an overview of the latest management solutions for water conservation in the chemical industry. "GPCA is delighted to introduce this new conference to the rich calendar of events Dubai offers each year. The importance of sustainability cannot be underestimated and is of particular concern to the chemicals industry which is traditionally highly energy-intensive. The GPCA Sustainability Conference will provide a platform on which industry stakeholders can discuss ways to efficiently incorporate sustainability best practices into each and every element of their business," said Dr. Abdulwahab Al-Sadoun, Secretary General, GPCA. "We can all work together to ensure our future evolves in a responsible way, and this conference is the first step in doing so," Al-Sadoun added. Sustainability is a key area of focus for the GPCA itself which estimates that less than 10% of plastic is recycled in the Gulf. Out of the 80 million tonnes of waste generated in the GCC each year, 26 million tons is plastic waste due to the high consumption of consumer products. The Sustainability Conference, the first of its kind in the region, represents an opportunity for businesses to focus not only on their financial position but also on the long-term health of the environment, economy and society around them. The conference will bring together industry leaders and experts to discuss ways chemicals companies can be more sustainable from the very beginning and how they can integrate sustainability in the planning process. Companies such as BASF, Borouge and the Dow Chemical Company will be represented. The GPCA Sustainability Conference will be held from 17-19 December in the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in DIFC.
