Switzerland to open embassy in Oman

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Switzerland will open an embassy in Oman to further diplomatic relations between the two countries, Filippo Lombardi, president of the Swiss Council of States, has said. Lombardi was speaking at a press conference on Monday during an official visit to Oman.

As a neutral and export-oriented country, Switzerland has had diplomatic and economic ties with the sultanate for 18 years, and is ready to boost the relations further, said Lombardi.

Switzerland is particularly keen to strengthen key areas like trade, commerce and tourism, and the opening of an embassy with a permanent ambassador would 'further boost Oman-Swiss ties'.

''We hope to strengthen business and cultural ties between the two countries. The embassy will also play a key role in promoting both Switzerland and Oman as tourism destinations as it can be a major contributor to economy,'' said Lombardi.

The common factors between the two countries, he said, were that both were 'peace-loving' and 'work toward diluting pressures and creating friendly solutions'.

Lombardi said the Swiss government was keen to enhance ties by involving Swiss companies in the development across Oman, particularly in the infrastructural field. He added that he was 'looking forward' to more direct flights between Switzerland and Oman.
