Shale energy could supply UK gas needs for four years

(MENAFN) In a statement, the chief executive of the shale gas explorer Dart energy warned that opponents of fracking are putting British jobs at risk and failing to take advantage of a fuel source that could power the country's gas needs for four years. John McGoldrick, who last week secured the backing of French energy giant GDF Suez in an USD38.7 million deal, said he hoped to begin drilling for shale in early 2015. The company believes there could be 110 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of shale gas within its license areas, with 60 tcf in the 13 blocks in which GDF has taken a 25pc stake. These span an area of 500 square miles. If only 10pc could be recovered, it would be equivalent to almost four years' worth of UK gas consumption. Mr McGoldrick said its impact could be "transformational".
