Residents Prepare Evacuations in Japan's Izu Oshima Island


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Around 120 residents will evacuate storm-battered Izu Oshima Island south of Tokyo in Japan on a chartered ship Wednesday afternoon following predictions that another powerful typhoon may arrive later this week. The evacuees are elderly people and their helpers, the municipal government of Oshima said, which will also assist handicapped people and pregnant women who wish to leave the island temporarily to avoid the year's 27th typhoon, Francisco, according to Japan's (Kyodo) News Agency Izu Oshima is located about 120 kilometers south of Tokyo The death toll on the island from the 26th typhoon, which last Wednesday brought torrential downpours leading to mudslides, has reached 29 so far, while 15 others still remain unaccounted for, according to the municipal government and police.
