10 died, 94 hurt on UAE roads during Eid holidays


(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) With the Eid Al Adha holidays meant to be a time of joyous celebration, tragedy struck on the country's roads during the three day break with a total of 10 deaths recorded as a result of traffic accidents, with a further 94 people injured. The figures were released by the Directorate General of Traffic Coordination Department at the Ministry of Interior and Director General of the Department Brigadier Ghaith Hassan Al Zaabi, said the accidents were caused by motorists failing to abide by the set traffic rules and regulations. He also noted that Traffic and Patrols Departments across the country are exerting significant efforts to prevent such accidents by increasing traffic awareness programmes; educating individuals on the dangers and means of prevention; as well as increasing patrols on roads. Statistics show the total number of accidents during this year's Eid holidays amounted to 55; including 34 collisions, 11 run-over accidents and with seven incidents involving overturned vehicles. The number of traffic-related deaths during Eid decreased by four from last year, but the number of accidents increased by nine this year. One dead, 4 hurt in Ajman In Ajman, at least one woman lost her life and four others were injured during the Eid break. According to Brigadier Ali Abdullah Elwan, Commander-in-Chief of the Ajman Police, four serious accidents were reported, with one Asian woman killed in a run-over accident. "The majority of accidents were caused by speeding or reckless driving. As many as 1,524 traffic law violations were recorded against motorists during the period," he said.
