Jabri, Balushi, Hassani to lead Oman's campaign in Kuwait

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) The Oman Sail trio of Hussain al Jabri, Ahmed al Hassani and Ahmed al Balushi hope to achieve good results at the 2013 Arab Sailing Championships in Kuwait from October 21-27 as they prepare for the Laser Worlds Championships.

Muscat Daily has learned that the trio will represent the sultanate for the Laser worlds, which will be held in Musannah from November 16, 2013 to January 3, 2014.

Rashid al Kindi, Oman Sail's national racing team manager, told Muscat Daily on Saturday that the trio will feature in the Laser Standard World Championship that will be held from November 17-23.

The Laser Standard will be the first of three back-to-back world championships in Musannah.

The Laser Masters will be the next event and will be held from December 1-7, while the Laser Radial Youth event will be held from December 29-January 3.

Meanwhile, the ten-member national team for the Kuwait regatta will also comprise Ahmed al Wahaibi in the senior Laser team. Six other youth team sailors have also been named.

Hassani and Balushi will compete in the Laser Radial class, while Jabri will contest in the Laser Standard class alongside Wahaibi.

The six youth team sailors picked are Salim al Alawi, Zakariya al Wahaibi, Ahmed al Mujaini and Mansoor al Mahrouqi (Optimist class), along with the duo of Aziz al Wahaibi and Khamis al Wahaibi (Laser 4.7 class).

Kindi said, ''The Arab Sailing Championships will serve as a perfect platform for the three sailors in the build-up to the Laser worlds. The event will give us a good idea on their preparations and we will be able to fine-tune them ahead of the worlds on their return from Kuwait.

''The Laser worlds will, in turn, be a key indicator of our sailors' potential on the world stage.''

Kindi said Allan Coutts, Oman Sail's racing coach from New Zealand, has put the senior Laser sailors through an intensive six-week training stint ahead of the Arab event.

The national team was named based on the performance results at a three-day national ranking qualification regatta held last August in Musannah.

The selection committee comprised Kindi, Coutts, Oman Sail's performance advisor Rob Andrews and its youth programme manager Marina Psichogiou.
