WBG and IMF Meeting to Focus on Global Economy


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) The world's top finance ministers and central bank governors will begin discussions here Friday at the three-day World Bank Group (WBG) and International Monetary Fund (IMF) Annual Meetings Some of the key issues to be discussed at the IMF-World Bank meeting are world economic outlook, euro-zone crisis, poverty eradication, economic development and making aid providing efforts effective Reforms for increasing voting shares of emerging markets are also on the agenda of the global financial leaders The main meetings are scheduled from October 11 to 13 in Washington, while other events are already in session since Tuesday Two other important issues most important for Africa are the replenishment of the International Development Association (IDA17) which occurs every three years; and the new World Bank Group Strategy The IDA17 Replenishment Meeting will take place on October 14 and 15 and will pave the way for the final meeting in Moscow at the end of the year The IDA is one of the world's largest sources of aid and the World Bank's main fund for the poorest countries In 2013, it committed US $8.2 Billion - more than half of its resources - to projects in Africa Grants account for about 20% of IDA funding and the rest is in the form of interest-free and long-term credits IDA is replenished every three years by both developed and developing country donors, and 52 countries contributed US $49.3 Billion during the last round of replenishment Tomorrow WBG President Jim Yong Kim and IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde will hold a media conference after this the seminar on 'The Rise of the Middle Class and the Service Delivery Gap in Latin America and the Caribbean' will open at 10am On Friday the IMF will hold at its headquarters a press briefing on the Middle East and Central Asia Regional Economic Outlook This will be followed by a session by WBG on 'Transition to Open Government in the Arab World'.
