Canadian frigate stops drug runners near Oman

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) The Canadian frigate HMCS Toronto intercepted a dhow carrying 154 bags of heroin, weighing over 180kg, in the Arabian Sea recently, while deployed on maritime security and counter terrorism missions to regional waters.

According to a release from the Royal Canadian Navy, the narcotics were catalogued and subsequently destroyed by crew members from the HMCS Toronto. The seizure is the seventh time the vessel has managed to disrupt suspected drug smugglers as part of ongoing counter-terrorism operations in the region.

The commanding officer of HMCS Toronto, Commander Matthew Bowen, said, ''A positive outcome like this, seizing and disposing of narcotics whose sale would have funded extremist groups, is a big win for Canada's counter-terrorism efforts.''

To date, HMCS Toronto has recovered nearly 7.8 metric tonnes of narcotics during this year's deployment.
