Malaysias August Total Trade Expanded by 13.2%


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Malaysias total trade in August 2013 expanded by 13.2 per cent to RM118.69 billion compared with the same month last year, said the International Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti). In a statement, carried by Malaysian News Agency (Bernama) today, Miti said the increase in total trade was contributed mainly by higher trade with Asean by RM4.49 billion, whereby trade with China amounted to RM3.56 billion and Taiwan RM1.39 billion. Exports for the month under review rose by 12.4 per cent to RM62.9 billion from last year, the highest monthly exports recorded for the first eight months of 2013. On a month-on-month basis, exports increased by 3.6 per cent, the third consecutive month of positive growth since June. It said exports to Singapore increased by 13.8 per cent to RM8.66 billion, followed by Thailand (RM3.46 billion), Indonesia (RM3.21 billion) and Vietnam (RM1.1 billion). Exports to the European Union rose by 20.4 per cent to RM5.72 billion compared with August last year, and to the Netherlands by 27.9 per cent to RM1.81 billion, followed by Germany (RM1.45 billion). "The expansion in exports was contributed mainly by higher exports of refined petroleum products, electrical and electronic products, primarily electronic integrated circuits, the manufacture of metal as well as chemicals and chemical products," Miti said. The ministry said imports in August also increased by 14.1 per cent to RM55.79 billion compared with August last year, whereby imports of intermediate goods increased by 3.1 per cent. Imports of capital goods rose by 3.2 per cent and consumption goods was up by 0.3 per cent. The countrys major import sources for the month under review were China (RM9.29 billion), Singapore (RM6.56 billion) and Japan (RM4.61 billion).
