Coal to replace gas in Asia power generation


(MENAFN) The International Energy Agency (IEA) said that natural gas will be replaced by coal as the main source for producing electricity in Southeast Asia in the next 20 years, Times of Oman reported. In 2035, the agency predicts that 49 percent of the power generated in the region will be from coal as demand on power in the region is growing twice the average worldwide. Power generated through coal comprised 31percent of the total power produced in the 10-nation bloc in 2011 Electricity produced through gas will form 28 percent down from 44 percent of the total electricity generated in the region. The executive director for the IEA said: "Coal is emerging as the fuel of choice because of its relative abundance and affordability in the region."
