Oman to showcase maritime heritage at Paris exhibition

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) A maritime exhibition titled ‘Oman et la mer' (Oman and the sea), which retraces 5,000 years of Omani seafaring history, will be held at the Musee national de la Marine (National Maritime Museum) in Paris from October 16 to January 5, 2014.

Houcine H Dahmane, cooperation and cultural action advisor, French Embassy in Muscat, said, ''This exhibition will strengthen the cultural exchanges between the two countries. The Omani Embassy in Paris has gone to great lengths to prepare for the exhibition in cooperation with Oman's ministries of Foreign Affairs and Heritage and Culture.''

Vice Admiral Jean-Marc Brûlez, director, National Maritime Museum, said that the exhibition is an opportunity to promote Oman's maritime heritage and culture. ''This event will be popular with the French and international audience.

''A meeting between museum officials and representatives from Oman during an exhibition devoted to Bangladesh in 2008 helped to build this collaboration. After months of research, discussions and coordination, we are pleased to present this exhibition to the public from next month. Over the years, our museum has maintained a successful relationship with Oman.''

After being given a traditional Omani welcome, visitors will be shown rare paintings and models showcasing the country's vessels such as the Bedan, the Zharookah, the Boum, the Shashah and the Jewel of Muscat.

Other exhibits will shed light on the export of frankincense from Dhofar.

Traditional Omani shipping methods such as sewing planks of wood using ropes made from coconut husks as well as navigational tools used in the past will be displayed.

A section on the golden age of Omani commerce, from the seventh to the 15th century, showing the maritime routes which facilitated cultural and commercial exchanges from major ports of the period such as Muscat, Sohar, Qalhat and Sur where goods such as incense, copper, spices, dates, silks and Chinese porcelain were traded, will also be on display.

The more modern exhibits will feature photographs and videos to illustrate the sultanate's development of large commercial and industrial ports of Sultan Qaboos, Salalah, Sohar and Duqm in order to diversify its economy.

A website dedicated to the exhibition will also be set
