Kuwaiti Acquitted, Iraqi Gets Five Years Jail In Drugs Case


(MENAFN- Arab Times) The Criminal Court, presided over by Judge Wael Al-Atiqi, acquitted a citizen and sentenced an Iraqi to five years in jail for the possession of narcotics with the intention to consume. The Public Prosecution had leveled charges against the two for possessing hashish, heroin and other narcotic substances with the intention to consume, It has been reported the accused had earlier been convicted of the same charges. The prosecution also charged the Iraqi with possession of firearm bullets and driving under the influence of drugs. Defense lawyer, Mohammad Al-Majidi, represented the citizen in court. He argues the procedures taken by the arresting officers were illegal due to the lack of justification to stop and search the suspects without obtaining a warrant from the concerned authority. He also cited the absence of witnesses and the shaky testimony of the arresting officers as rationalizations for the acquittal of his client. Columnist fined: The Criminal Court on Thursday imposed a fin of KD 10,000 each on columnist Fouad Al-Hashem and Al-Sabah Channel for defaming former Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad Bin Jassem Al Thani and his wife. The plaintiff's lawyer, Abdullah Tahir, attended the previous court session along with six officers from Qatar, during which he pointed out that Al-Hashem repeated the offensive act against Sheikh Hamad Bin Jassem Al Thani and his wife. He said he believes in the integrity of the Kuwaiti judiciary, so he is confident that justice will be served.
