Oman can become logistics hub: World Bank consultant

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) The sultanate has all the potential to grow as a significant logistics hub in the Middle East by tapping available opportunities in an organised way, C Bert Kruk, port consultant of the World Bank, has said.

Bert Kruk was delivering a lecture titled 'Introduction to Logistics and Transport: The Future of Oman' at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) on Wednesday.

A press release said that the lecture was held under the patronage of H H Sayyida Muna bint Fahd al Said, assistant vice chancellor for external cooperation, SQU. The lecture was preceded by a presentation on the function and possibilities of a transportation simulator.

He laid stress on value-added services to complement warehousing, transportation and logistics activities.

''The proposed rail network project of GCC countries, worth US$100bn, is a cost effective means to transport goods and services in the region. Without transportation and logistics, nothing moves. But you can move it when you organise it,'' he said. As per the logistics performance index prepared by the World Bank, Oman occupies the 62nd position with a score of 2.89 in a one to five index range. ''This is a fairly good score,'' Bert Kruk was quoted as saying in the release.

The speaker underscored the need for national and international training opportunities in this sector, which could be facilitated by effective collaboration between the government, industry and knowledge institutions.

''Being the leading university in the country, SQU has a key role to play in this regard,'' he said. Bert Kruk was the first CEO of the Sohar Industrial Port Company
