GE awarded Algerian power plant deal

(MENAFN) Sonelgaz, an Algerian energy company, said that US-based General Electric has been awarded a USD2.2 billion contract to supply six Algerian power plants with turbines, The Peninsula Qatar reported. Algeria has plans to construct six power plants to generate between 1,200 and 1,600 megawatts each by 2017. Sonelgaz chief said: "GE has won the contract to provide the turbines with a total capacity of 8,400 megawatts for a sum of $2.2 billion." The new planned plants aim at ending the frequent power cuts the country suffers from especially when demand peaks during the summer.
