Boehner Refuses to Meet with Russian Delegation on Syria


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) John Boehner, the top Republican in the US House of Representatives, rejected an official request to meet the Russian delegation. The initiative by Russia came about as American lawmakers prepare to vote on US President Obama's call for military strikes in Syria. Michael Steel, Boehner's spokesman said. "The Speaker has declined the Russian Embassy's request that he meet with a delegation". CNN quoted a spokesman for the Russian Embassy in Washington as saying the visit was still being planned, and that it would take place "next week". The spokesman also told CNN that the delegation would include members of the RF Federal Assembly (from both the RF Gosduma and the RF Federation Council) and that they intended to speak with Republicans and Democrats in both the House and Senate. On Monday, Valentina Matviyenko, Chairman of the RF Federation Council, said that the delegation would try to arrive in the USA before 9 September. Earlier this week, President Vladimir Putin backed plans to send a parliamentary delegation to the USA for talks with the US Congress regarding Syria.
