UAE- Biggest losers 'weight' for gold
(MENAFN - Khaleej Times) They came. They weighed. They won. But more than 3,000 contestants of Dubai's 'Your Weight in Gold' campaign will have to wait another two weeks before they can pick up their winning gold coins corresponding to the number of kilogrammes they shed during the six-week contest.
Although a total of 10,666 people had initially enrolled for the most rewarding weight loss programme that began on July 19, only about half of them completed the online registration process. And it was only some 3,000 plus contestants who came back for the final weigh-in in the past five days.
The last day of the final weigh-in saw the highest number of participants turning up for checking the fruits of their labour. The Director of Corporate Marketing and Relations Department Mohammed Al Noori told Khaleej Times that as many as 1,380 contestants checked their final weight on Tuesday, the last day.
"They were waiting for the chance to lose the maximum weight," said Al Noori.
Many participants chose to wait till the final day to check their weight and many were overjoyed at the final weigh-in when they discovered how much they had lost. Some were even emotional and all praised the municipality for the motivation to shed the kilos.
Dr Najiba Al Shezawy, a consultant with the Professionals Regulatory Affairs, that tied up with the civic body to run the campaign, said the names of all those who gave their final weight will be entered into a raffle for prizes apart from the gold coins they deserve.
The municipality will give away one gram of gold for each kilogramme lost till the first five kg. Participants will get two grams of gold each for every kilo they lost from 6kg to 10kg. And for those who lost more than 10kg, the prize will triple after 10kg i.e., three gram gold for each kilo from 11kg.
Also, top three winners who have lost the maximum weight will be given gold worth Dh20,000 through a lucky draw as announced earlier.
Dr Al Shezawy said a lot of participants had taken serious efforts to lose five to 10kgs and some top losers managed to shed more than 20kgs. However, all of them will have to wait till the third week of September to receive the gold prizes, said Al Noori. "We will organise a grand function to give away the prizes after the Director General Hussain Nasser Lootah gets back. Before that we need to tabulate and evaluate all the results. We will also provide the details of the participants based on different categories like gender, age etc."
The official said the medical team associated with the campaign will make special interviews with those who lost the most weight to ensure they resorted to genuine and healthy ways to achieve the target. "We had already given advice and classes to people on how to slim down in a healthy way. We want to ensure that they stuck to the rules," he said. - email@example.com
'Health is the real prize'
From 127kg to 103kgs. 24 kilogrammes shed in six weeks. An amazing feat for Artsiom Dzendzivitski who participated in Dubai's 'Your Weight in Gold' campaign.
The 29-year-old Belarusian could be one of the top losers - the real winners - and he stands a chance to get 57grams of gold.
An engineer, Dzendzivitski told Khaleej Times that he wished to gift the gold to his mother and wife. However, his new look and healthy body would be an even more valuable gift for his wife who is expected to join him in a month.
"Of course she will be very happy to see me like this. We last met in April," he said.
Dzendzivitski said he had made up his mind to cut his flab more than a month before the contest began. But he had managed to lose only four kilos from 131kgs. However, the contest inspired him to dream bigger.
So, what is the secret to his success? Dzendzivitski followed a strict regime.
An hour in the gym, half an hour in the sauna and swimming in the pool in his building in JLT every day made sure he burned a lot of calories while a strict diet of fruits, vegetables and fish cut down his calorie intake.
So, which expert advised him with these tips? Dzendzivitski giggles and says, "The Internet."
Now that he has reached 103kgs, Dzendzivitski is not ready to give up. "I will continue this (regime)...I want to reach my ideal weight of 88kgs."
