Arab Ministers Blame Syrian Regime for Use of Chemical Weapons


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Arab Foreign Ministers condemned Sunday the use of chemical weapons in Syria and described it as flagrant challenge and disregard of humanitarian values and international law. The Arab League Council, in a statement at the end of the Arab Ministers' 140th session chaired by Libya, condemned this heinous crime, calling for bringing its perpetrators to justice. It also called on the Arab and the international community to work together and provide all assistance required to the Syrian people to help them defend themselves. The Arab Foreign Ministers also called on the UN and the international community to shoulder their responsibility in accordance with the UN Charter and the norms of international law and take action against perpetrators of the crime, putting the blame on the Syrian regime. The Council also announced that it will remain in a permanent session to follow up on the latest developments in Syria. Algeria expressed it reservation concerning calling on the United Nations and the international community to shoulder their responsibilities and take necessary measures against perpetrators of the crime. Algeria asked that the council to wait for the final results of the United Nations inspectors team before making such a call. Iraq for its part did not vote for the paragraph relating to holding the Syrian regime accountable for the crime, nor did it vote for having the UN take action against Syria. Lebanon made reservations about the entire communique. HE Foreign Minister Dr. Khalid bin Mohammed Al Attiyah chaired Qatar's delegation to the meeting.
