UAE- National workshops to curb needless child deaths

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The Ministry of Interior is boosting its child protection efforts by introducing a number of nationwide projects including a series of workshops for parents and childcare services. The news comes after several high-profile cases involving child deaths came to light over the past year, many of which were preventable including falls from high balconies and house fires. The Director of the Child Protection Centre at the MoI said the ministry was preparing a social programme that would be executed by different institutions across the nation to provide specific groups the opportunity to gain skills and expertise to enhance children safety. The programme aimed to decrease injuries due to traffic accidents, fires, falling from balconies, drowning, poisoning, and many other preventable childhood accidents. He said a series of organised workshops focusing on preventable injuries, and responding with best practices would happen nationwide. The workshops were discussed during the first meeting for liaison officers for child protection, held at the MoI's Centre for Child Protection. Representatives from police social support and human rights services and administration were present. The meeting, headed by Lieutenant Colonel Faisal Mohammed Al Shammari, Director of the MoI's Child Protection Centre, discussed the guidelines of investigation procedures with regard to aggression and neglect cases that might take place against children. It also covered the training programmes that the General Secretary and Director of the Child Protection Department at the MoI requested to build required capacities and experiences in order to achieve the highest levels of police performance and apply the best international practices. The three programmes will be distributed over three levels; the first covers an introduction to child protection, the second addresses the means of accomplishment, and the third tackles planning and preparation to meet with child victims, investigation, and mutual work. Major General Nasser Lakhrebani Al Nuaimi, Secretary General of the Office of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Lt-General Shaikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, said the UAE has made great progress in the child protection field.
