Though the markets are picking up for volatility, the economic docket moving forward is light. That won’t necessarily stop a swell in sentiment that is defined by fear should cascading stops start to force an unwinding of leveraged position (leveraged used at NYSE brokers hit a record recently).
We have seen a pull back in carry, Treasuries and a few other risk sensitive markets. However, the S&P 500’s stubbornness is evidence that we haven’t seen a full scale unwind in speculative positioning to this point.
If it develops, there will be no mistaking it – we will have the dollar soaring while the S&P 500 collapses.
