Christie's announces art and watch auction


(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Auction house Christie's recently announced that it will be re-launching its highly popular watch sales auction, along with its first online-only sale for Middle Eastern art. The two-week online art auction will open on October 24 and will run until November 11, 2013. Christie's Dubai will also be holding its traditional sales for modern and contemporary Arab, Iranian and Turkish Art on October 29 and October 30. The watch sale will be held on the evening of October 29, immediately after the art sales. Christie's pre-sale exhibition will be open for the public from October 27 onwards at the Emirates Towers Hotel, where all the lots will be on view. In addition, Christie's Education will be organising a tailor-made three-day course titled "Introduction to the International Art Market" from October 26 to October 28. The course will focus on both international and local themes, with exclusive access to private collections, personal tours and discussions with leading artists, curators and gallery owners. Lectures will be given on themes such as the power of the collector; how to value art; art insurance; artistic productions in the Middle East; and the structure of the art world. "I am also delighted to welcome back watch sales into the auction calendar and to host a team from Christie's Education who will, through a programme of personal tours, discussions and exclusive led by leading local artists, curators and gallery owners, be de-mystifying the international art market," Jeha added. Some of the art pieces to go on sale include a captivating work by the modern Iraqi master, Shakir Hassan Al Said, and a beautiful oil painting by the master of modern Egyptian art, Mahmoud Said, titled Assouan €" Les Rochers. Also on sale is an 18-karat gold tourbillon wrist-watch by Breguet, originally made for the 200th anniversary of the invention of the tourbillon movement by the firm. The watch is estimated at $60,000-$80,000. Another highlight is an 18-karat rose gold oversized skeletonised time piece with flying tourbillon by Cartier estimated at $40,000-$60,000.
