(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) A man who allegedly posed as a woman matchmaker and swindled people offering her services through smart phones has finally fallen in the police net.
The Sharjah Police arrested the Gulf national on Tuesday after a woman victim who lost Dh500 filed a complaint.
The man posed as a woman named Umm Mansour and sent out messages on smart phones to women saying if they were interested in getting married, "she" could find them grooms of their likes in secret and arrange their engagement.
The women were supposed to call "her" back and book for the services.
A top Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officer said they received a complaint from a woman who claimed that she was cheated by someone named Umm Mansour whom she added in her BB (BlackBerry) Messenger list.
The complainant told the police that she started communicating with the suspect asking "her" to arrange for a groom as soon as possible.
Some days later, the suspect sent her a message saying "she" had found her a groom who matched her descriptions and asked her to pay Dh500 to arrange a meeting with him. The victim sent the money through a money exchange office but found out later that she was being cheated.
The police formed a team of CID officers who tracked down Umm Mansour, who turned out to be a man, and arrested him from his apartment in Sharjah.
During interrogation, the suspect confessed to the crime and informed the police that he had duped several women this way.
Based on his confession, he has been referred to the Public Prosecution.
The police warned smart phone users against responding to messages from strangers and fraudulent advertisements that appear in their devices.
