UAE- Accidents claim 19 lives during Eid weekend


(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) As many as 19 people died, while another 64 sustained injuries countrywide during the Eid Al Fitr holiday, the Interior Ministry has disclosed. The breakdown of figures show the total traffic accidents which took place during the period from August 7 to 10 stood at 32 - of which 16 were collisions, nine involved pedestrian run-overs, and seven involved motor vehicles overturning. Of those injured in the accidents, 12 were in serious condition, 23 were moderately injured and 29 people sustained minor injuries. Speed was the main cause behind the majority of the accidents, and led to the deaths of seven people, followed by reckless driving which resulted in the deaths of three people, the Ministry's General Department of Traffic Coordination statistics showed. Misjudgment led to the deaths of three people, motorists entering the road before ensuring it was clear resulted in the deaths of two people, while four others were killed due to other careless driving manoeuvres. Reckless driving resulted in the injuries of 15 people, while jumping traffic signals led to the injuries of 13. Interior Ministry Traffic Coordination director Brigadier Ghaith Hassan Al Zaabi said people not observing traffic rules had led to the occurrence of accidents which marred the joy of Eid to a number of families. Traffic and Patrols departments in the country were exerting an enormous efforts to curb road accidents through enhancing the traffic awareness programme, as well as intensifying patrols, he said. He called on motorists to fully abide by the traffic laws and rules - including leaving sufficient space between cars and sticking to the speed limits and not using mobile phones while driving - to avoid such accidents. Sharjah Meanwhile, Sharjah Police have announced eight of the 19 deaths recorded happened in the emirate, in seven major accidents which also left 14 injured. There were three severe injuries, eight moderate and three minor according to Colonel AbdulRahman Al Shawaf the Director of Traffic and Patrols unit at Sharjah Police. Speeding, not leaving enough distance among vehicles and sleeping behind the wheels were among the main causes of the accidents that claimed lives on the road over Eid, he said. In some of the reported accidents, one vehicle overturned and caught fire on Kalba road killing all six family members on board. And in another tragic accident, an Indian driver veered off the road and ran over six members of a British family - killing the British father and his seven year old son - after momentarily falling asleep at the wheel.
