European stocks mixed as banks gain and BOE weighs

European stock markets were mixed at Wednesday’s closing, with British equities lower after the Bank of England’s inflation report, while French Banks lifted the CAC 40 index.

The Bank of England provided explicit forward guidance on monetary policy, saying its key rate will remain at a record low of 0.5% until the country’s unemployment rate drops to 7%. However, the pledge failed to spur optimism in the equity market as investors feared the bank would struggle to stick to its guidance if inflation increases too much or the economy improves faster than anticipated.

Markets were also weighed down by concerns over the tapering of the U.S. Federal Reserve’s monetary stimulus.

The benchmark index for Europe, the STOXX 600 ended lower by 0.23% to 302.81 points, and STOXX 50 ended higher by 0.13% at 2794.44 points.
