US Urges Citizens to Leave Yemen


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency)   US Department of State warns U.S citizens of the high security threat level in Yemen due to terrorist activities and civil unrest. The Department urges U.S. citizens to defer travel to Yemen and those US citizens currently living in Yemen to depart immediately. Today, the Department of State ordered the departure of non-emergency US government personnel from Yemen due to the continued potential for terrorist attacks. The US Department of State warns U.S. citizens of the high security threat level in Yemen due to terrorist activities and civil unrest," the State Department said in a statement released Tuesday. "The Department urges U.S. citizens to defer travel to Yemen and those US citizens currently living in Yemen to depart immediately." State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in a separate statement: "As we have said, we are concerned about a threat stream indicating the potential for terrorist attacks against US persons or facilities overseas, especially emanating from the Arabian Peninsula. As such, the Department is taking appropriate steps to protect our employees, including local employees and visitors to our facilities." The State Department said that, because of minimal staffing in Yemen, it would only be able to provide extremely limited services for any Americans remaining in Yemen. The global terror alert issued Friday was prompted by intercepted communications between the head of al Qaeda in Pakistan and the chief of the group's affiliate in Yemen, known as AQAP, said current and former officials familiar with the intelligence reports.
