Australia to increase tax on tobacco

(MENAFN) Australia decided to increase the tax on tobacco by 50 percent over the next four years, Saudi Gazette reported. The move to increase tax on tobacco by 12.5 percent annually for the next four years comes as a part of the countrys campaign against smoking. Also this decision will help boost the Australian economy as it is expected to bring USD4.75 billion during the implementation period. "It will provide funds for cancer and stroke-related health services, it will deter young people from taking up smoking, and it will help return the budget to surplus," said Treasurer Chris Bowen. The Health Minister, Tanya Plibersek, stated that those who quit smoking because of costs comprise over 50 percent , according to a survey. She said: "By increasing the cost of tobacco we send a strong message to young people not to take up smoking, and we encourage existing smokers to give up or at least cut back."
