Dubai gas stations to start accepting credit cards
(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Customers will once again be able to use credit cards to pay for petrol at Enoc, Eppco, and Emarat petrol pumps in Dubai, beginning tomorrow. However, there will be a surcharge of Dh2 to avail the service.
The service was banned in 2007, due to charges levied by banks on the purchase. Officials at Emarat, Enoc, and Eppco refused to comment on the subject, and have dismissed the move as rumour. One Emarat official told Khaleej Times: "A statement will be issued in due time, but as of now we are not going to respond to rumours."
However, station managers at various gas stations confirmed the services will begin on Sunday. An Eppco station attendant in Oud Metha said they were starting the service on Sunday.
"Drivers can pay using credit cards as of Sunday, but only for petrol and not other purchases."
Workers at an Emarat petrol station also confirmed the service would begin on Sunday.
Residents and motorists have expressed relief over the new decision. Indian national Kshir Sudarshan said the move was "helpful".
"This could help motorists during emergencies. There is a Dh2 deduction when you withdraw money through ATM's other than your concerned bank, so paying Dh2 for this service is not much of an issue, especially (in case of) an emergency."
Another resident Bassam Mehdi said there were only certain occasions when the new service would help. "All service centres now have an ATM service in their stations. So introducing the credit service does not really make much of a difference. Unless, the ATM machine is not working."
