New mechanism of compliance for Kenyan flower business


(MENAFN) The Kenyan flower business will have to abide to a new mechanism of compliance for all who are involved in the flower business, Xinhua reported. Jane Ngige, CEO of Kenya Flower Council (KFC), said: "All exporters of flowers should demonstrate compliance to international standards by the end of 2015." She said that the Dutch government gave USD400.000 to put the mechanism in place. Ngige emphasized the importance of the flower business and the importance of sustaining it. "So, we will remain proactive to ensure that Kenyan flowers remains globally competitive," the CEO said. The KFC exports USD1.7 million of flowers daily, nearly 500 tonnes a day. The flower business employs nearly 600.000 Kenyans around 90.000 of them are employed directly. There are around 100 flower farms and over 3.000 small growers in Kenya. Kenyan flower comprises 40 percent of Europe's flower imports.
