UAE- Dh600,000 compensation for worker after scaffold fall

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Upholding the lower court's verdict, the Abu Dhabi Court of Appeal has ordered a contracting company to pay Dh600,000 to a worker as indemnity following a fall at work which left him partially paralysed. The worker, who fell one storey from a wooden scaffold on the 59th floor, landed on his back and sustained a spinal cord injury which caused paralysis to his lower limbs. The court convicted the contracting company of negligence and failing to provide the correct safety facilities and equipment for the protection of workers on site. The accident happened when the victim fell through a hole in the scaffold, smashing several of his vertebrae on impact. He also suffered from incontinence and according to the report of the forensic doctor, he estimated the disability the victim had incurred at 60 per cent. Earlier the Abu Dhabi Misdemeanors Court had convicted the contracting company in absentia for negligence and causing physical harm to the worker, who was left unable to work again.
