Dubai Police seize 272 cartons of firecrackers


(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The Dubai Police have confiscated 272 cartons of firecrackers during the two weeks of the awareness campaign it had started on the dangers of firecrackers since the beginning of Ramadan, according to Brigadier Abdullah Al Ghaithi, Director of the General Department of Emergency of the Dubai Police. He said that the explosion department at the General Department of Emergency has intensified its campaign and police patrols and inspection in coordination with other concerned authorities to seize firecrackers which posed danger to community members and their properties. He said around 100 shops were inspected in two weeks and the police distributed a number of brochures, put up posters in shopping centres, mosques and shops in residential areas to warn people against the use and circulation of firecrackers. Thee police also took to twitter and facebook as well as various radio programmes to spread awareness. Al Ghaithi said during the campaign the explosion department found out that some people had hidden firecrackers in their homes and were buying and selling them from home. He noted that the criminal investigation department (CID) is seeking permission from the Dubai Public Prosecution to inspect and raid such places and confiscate firecrackers before any accident happens. Al Ghaithi revealed that the police had also found some people selling firecrackers through different forms of social media including BlackBerry Messenger (BBM). The police received complaints from people that they received messages regarding sale of firecrackers in some areas in the UAE with the option of free delivery from emirate to emirate . He said that the police is following up the messages and will soon arrest those who sell or are involved in the promotion of firecrackers. On his part, Lieutenant Khaled Al Mazroui, coordinator of firecrackers awareness campaign, said as part of the campaign many awareness lectures have been delivered in various areas of Dubai including Modhesh city and sports clubs as well as in several Ramadan tenants to educate people on the dangers of use of firecrackers on children and adults. The police are also coordinating with Awqaf department to deliver lectures in Juma prayers, visited residential areas council, met with parents and urged them to participate in the campaign, he said. Al Mazroui called on families to not allow children to buy or use firecrackers and also not to respond to such BBMs. Instead he urged people to inform the police about how the sellers managed to get their pin numbers and send them messages. He said that 205 cartons were confiscated during the first week and 67 cartons during the second week of the anti firecrackers campaign.
