UAE- Jobless gets 10 years for assaulting student

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) A jobless man, who sexually assaulted a Fine Arts student on the backseat of his car after he intercepted her and her friend posing as a Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officer, has been sentenced to ten years in prison. The defendant, a 26-year-old Emirati, is believed to have lured the student, an Egyptian, to ride in his car 'to take her testimony on the nature of her relationship with the man he had caught her with'. However, once she stepped into his car he locked the doors and forced himself on her. The Court of First Instance found him guilty of sexual assault, illegal confinement and impersonation of a police officer. The student, 19, told the prosecutor that the incident happened on January 2. She was in her Emirati friend's car outside a cafeteria in Sharjah when the accused stopped by them claiming he was a CID officer. Both students begged him not to make it an issue. While the complainant was driving to her home alone, the accused asked her to pull over in a parking lot in Al Qusais. "The accused then rode in my car and told me that my friend confessed to him that we had consensual sex, which was untrue. He said the police had been watching us for two weeks," she claimed. He then made her ride in his car to complete her testimony after threatening he would report her to the police and expose her outings with her friend in front of her mother. He told her to sit on the back seat to sign some papers and he then sat next to her. He allegedly kissed and touched her telling her to enjoy her time as she cried. He then allegedly forced himself on her and told her not to tell anyone, especially her friend about what he did or he would report her to the police. The complainant's friend, a 22-year-old Emirati student, said the accused made them believe he was talking on his mobile phone with the police station. A police sergeant said that they arrested the accused outside his house in Al Quoz at 3am the following day. He denied the student's assault accusations and claimed he saw her outside a shopping centre and threw a piece of paper on her with his mobile number. The forensic report confirmed the student was assaulted by the defendant. The verdict can be appealed within 15 days.
