UAE- Bank teller charged with embezzling Dh350,000

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) A bank teller allegedly embezzled Dh350,000 from a local bank where he used to work and travelled back to his home country shortly after, a court heard. The runaway Egyptian banker left the UAE on October 10, 2012. It was only after his departure that the administration of the bank branch in Al Twar in Al Qusais discovered the embezzled amount. According to prosecution records, the defendant, who is being charged in absentia, forged a cheque which he took out of a cheque book issued by the bank in the name of a car rental agency. The cheque was worth Dh250,000 and due on September 29, 2012. He abused his post at the bank to steal the cheque and falsify its details. He forged a withdrawal form with which he managed to withdraw Dh250,000 from the account of an Emirati customer. To pass the transaction, he used the identification documents submitted by the account holder in previous transactions. He also embezzled Dh100,000 from the cash that was entrusted with him because of his job. The Emirati bank branch manager said that in October their bank received a call from a car rental company inquiring about the withdrawal of Dh250,000 from its account. "The auditors knew that it was the accused, who conducted that transaction. The accused stole a cheque from a cheque book issued to that company". The bank ran a thorough audit on the work done by the defendant and also found out that he stole Dh100,000 from the cash money he was handling to meet and finalise customers' demands. The defendant left the UAE for Egypt through the Dubai International Airport on the same day he stole the money. He was charged in the Court of First Instance with embezzlement of public funds, forgery and use of forged official document and use of others' authentic documents.
