PPP names Rabbani as presidential candidate

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times)  The Pakistan People's Party (PPP) has nominated Senator Raza Rabbani as its candidate in the next month's elections for the post of president of Pakistan. President Asif Ali Zardari, whose tenure ends in September, has already made it clear that he would not contest for the second term and would instead try to reorganise the party which suffered heavy defeat in the general election held in May last. The announcement was made by the party's senior leader Makhdoom Amin Fahim while addressing a late night Press conference held at the Chief Minister's House in Karachi. "Rabbani's candidature was discussed at all levels of party and it was agreed that he should be PPP's candidate for the post of president of Pakistan," Fahim said. Several other names were discussed during the meeting but none were found as suitable as Rabbani although PPP had obtained five nomination forms for presidential elections. Fahim also said that the party was holding talks with other opposition parties to field a joint candidate and even approached the ruling PML-N with the same proposal. A sombre looking Rabbani stated that he was honoured to be named party's presidential candidate and if elected he would strive for strengthening the federation and work for more autonomy for the provinces.
