(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) More than 200,000 children around the world have already benefited from UAE's latest charity campaign aimed at providing clothes to needy children. Telecom providers du and etisalat were among the first few companies pledging support for the 'Dress 1 million children' campaign, as both companies donated Dh3 million each.
Children in Bosnia were the first to receive new clothes from the money raised by the campaign, which was launched on Thursday by His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
"His Highness Shaikh Mohammed's initiatives have always touched millions of lives in the region and globally reaching out to the needy regardless of race, colour or religion. This kind of important initiatives puts the UAE in the spotlight and highlights its leading position as a global centre for humanitarian action," said Ahmad Abdulkarim Julfar, CEO, Etisalat Group.
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority also announced a donation of Dh1 million in support of the campaign setting a good example for employees to follow.
"The RTA has placed boxes for collecting donations of employees, and sent e-mail messages urging all staffs to interact with the campaign. This campaign will continue till Ramadan 19 where the funds raised will be credited to the account of the campaign," said Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the RTA.
Individual donors have also voiced support for the campaign on social media spreading awareness about the campaign, which has already raised over Dh9 million in three days.
Telecom providers are also supporting the initiative by sending SMSs to subscribers and encouraging them to donate. Earlier, prominent UAE businessman Hussain Al Sajwani also supported the campaign by donating Dh2 million to dress 50,000 children.
The campaign will continue until the 19th day of Ramadan (July 28) and plans to provide clothing to one million needy children globally.
Contributions can be made by sending 'dress' via SMS to 7040 donating Dh40 to dress one child, to 7160 contributing Dh160 to dress four children, to 7240 donating Dh240 to dress six children and to 7400 contributing Dh400 to dress 10 children.
