UAE- Visitor jailed for groping woman

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) A 27-year-old man on a visit visa has been sentenced to one year in prison for molesting a woman in the lift of a hotel on July 12 last year. The Court of First Instance also ordered that the Afghan defendant be deported after his jail term. He is believed to have taken advantage of the fact that the woman was alone in the lift. The woman, a Jordanian secretary, 23, said she saw the accused in the lift at around 5pm and he asked her about her nationality and her workplace. She told him she worked for a legal consultancy office. The woman added that the accused said something about her skin colour before he took her by surprise and fondled her. She screamed at him and pushed his hand away. When the lift reached the ground floor the defendant rushed out. No security guard was there at that time. The following day, she informed her superior at work and they checked the CCTV footage and they reported the incident to the police. A policeman quoted the accused as admitting to have touched the complainant. A CD featuring the defendant pinching the woman's arm and fondling her, was enclosed as prosecution evidence. The verdict is subject to appeal within 15 days.
