UAE- Husband, wife accused of torturing maid

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The Dubai Police have referred an Asian woman and her husband to the authorities for allegedly beating up a maid and causing severe injuries. The absconding maid who escaped after being tortured, was found by a UAE national who called for an ambulance. Major Ahmed Al Merri, Director of the Investigation Department, said the police received a call from Rashid Hospital that an Indonesian maid was brought to the hospital with bruises on different parts of her body. No documents were found in the possession of the maid who was in a critical condition. A police team rushed to the hospital and found the maid unable to even speak due to swelling. There were injuries on her skull and face and also burns on her back. The ambulance driver who drove the maid to the hospital told the police that he found the maid with a UAE national who had called for the ambulance. The police found the local man who informed the police that he had found the maid in a distress situation and that she was about to collapse. The police launched an investigation in the area and another Asian maid who knew the victim informed the police that she knew where the tortured maid worked and that she had heard screams coming from the house several times. She led the police to the house. Though the woman sponsor denied accusations of torture initially, when confronted by the police, she confessed that she used to beat up the maid when she refused to do certain jobs. Al Merri added that the husband has also been referred to the police as he is party to the crime because he did not inform the police or try to prevent the crime.
