UAE- Cleaner accused of stealing watch worth Dh20,000

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) A 27-year-old cleaner allegedly stole a watch worth Dh20,000 and tried to re-sell it with a forged receipt, a court heard. According to prosecution records, the Bangladeshi defendant stole a purchase receipt form and a watch from the jewellery shop where he worked. He then allegedly filled up the form, forged a signature and stamped it with the shop's seal to give it authenticity. He faced charges of theft, forgery and use of forged unofficial document in the Court of First Instance. A jewellery salesman at the shop said the watch owner had brought it for repair on December 29, 2010. They sent it to Switzerland and when it was sent back they called the owner to collect it, but could not reach him. The watch was kept in the shop in a place where only employees had access to. "On April 22, 2011, we received a phone call from the police informing us that a watch belonging to our shop was stolen," the salesman said. He said he later learnt that the accused stole the watch and forged its purchase receipt. An engineer, who works with the Funds Section of the Dubai Police, said that they had issued a circular to all the shops at the Gold Souq in Deira to inform the police whenever any customer wanted to sell them a precious jewellery item. "On April 22, we went to a shop there and questioned the defendant about the watch. He claimed it was his and produced its purchase receipt," the engineer said. The police officers got suspicious when the accused showed them his labour card which read he was a cleaner. They called his employer to come to the police point at the Souq and they learnt the watch belonged to a customer who had dropped it at the jewellery shop for repair. A verdict is expected later.
