UAE- Man accused of blackmailing former girlfriend with photos

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times)  A 24-year-old jobless man has been charged with blackmailing his ex-girlfriend into paying him Dh6,500 after threatening to circulate and send her photos to her brothers. The Emirati, who met the 25-year-old complainant (also unemployed) in a shopping mall where they exchanged mobile numbers, fooled her that he wanted to marry her and made her send him her photos. He faced in the Court of First Instance the charges of making a threat to commit a crime, abuse of telecommunications to harass others and for an illegitimate purpose, and blackmailing others to pay him money. He denied in court the blackmail charge but admitted the other charges. The woman said in the investigation that she had fallen in love with the defendant after meeting him in a mall. She sent him three photos upon his request to show to his mother. He told her about a week later that his mother disapproved of their marriage. He then tried to extort a total of Dh6,500 from her after threatening to hand her brothers the photos to disgrace her. "He stopped harassing me for a few months, but then called me and told me to pay him Dh25,000 and blackmailed me with the same threat". He insisted on his demand even though she told him she did not have the amount. She sought the help of the Dubai Police's Al Ameen service and he called her later telling her to drop her accusations. "He said he was not scared. He even came to our house and told the maid to call on one of my brothers". The complainant said that the defendant wanted to put her under pressure to pay him the money. When he sent her a mobile SMS text message she complained in person at Al Rashidiya police station. Part of the prosecution evidence is a copy of the message sent by the accused with the threatening content.
