Rockets fired from Syria hit Lebanon's Bekaa: security

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times)  Four rockets fired from across the border inside Syria hit eastern Lebanon on Wednesday, a Lebanese security official told AFP. "Four rockets fired from Syrian territory struck an area between Nabishit and Sarain villages," the official said on condition of anonymity. The area hit was in the Sarine valley of Lebanon's eastern Bekaa, a stronghold of the country's powerful Hezbollah movement. The official did not elaborate on any casualties or damage, but said the area struck is not residential. There have been several attacks from rebel-held areas of Syria on Hezbollah strongholds in Lebanon in recent months. Such attacks increased after Hezbollah, along with Syrian army forces, last week captured from rebel hands the key central Syrian town of Qusayr. The latest attack comes hours after a Syrian helicopter gunship fired rockets at Arsal, as the signs of a spill-over from Syria's conflict into Lebanon grew more ominous. In a rare warning after the helicopter strike against President Bashar Al Assad's regime, the Lebanese army said troops "took the necessary defensive measures to respond immediately to any similar violations". President Michel Sleiman called the attack "a violation of Lebanon's sovereignty" and said Beirut has the right to take steps to defend itself and to "submit a complaint" to the UN and the Arab League. The United States condemned the attack. Although Lebanon has officially adopted a position of neutrality in Syria's conflict, it is sharply divided into pro and anti-Damascus camps. Syria dominated Lebanon politically and militarily for 30 years until 2005, and continues to exert significant influence through its allies over the small Mediterranean country.
