UAE- Man accused of assaulting kin with down syndrome

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times)  An unemployed man stood trial for allegedly sexually assaulting his 17-year-old relative with down syndrome in the majlis of the boy's house when the former was drunk. The 48-year-old defendant, with a Comoros Island passport, is the uncle of the boy's father and had been living with the family for four years. He stood trial in the Court of First Instance on the charges of sexual assault and consuming alcohol. He could not understand the charges in court when they were read out in Arabic, so the court adjourned the hearing to July 2 when a translator for Farsi would be available. The boy's father, an Emirati employee, 40, said his son had down syndrome and was mentally disabled, with no perception and reasoning capabilities. On April 13, he was sleeping in his room when he heard his wife shouting and crying. She told her husband that she saw the accused sexually assaulting their son in the house majlis, claiming that the defendant fled the scene. The boy's mother, a 35-year-old housewife, said that the defendant was the uncle of her husband. On that day, she was looking for her son when she entered the majlis and saw the accused having unnatural sex with her son. She shouted and fainted because of the shock before the accused ran off. Al Muraqqabat police arrested the accused two days later.
